As you all know,sensehow.com was recently migrated from bluehost to knownhost since i had to maitain a number of sites under one account.Though knownhost is one of the best vps provider i had to face a lot of problems initially just after switching host.I had to contact the customer care each time i faced a problem.Since i moved from a great shared webhost bluehost,i was wondering “What’s Wrong?” with the knownhost vps server?I participated in a number of forums and asked questions and no one knew about it.
One big problem i faced in knownhost is the CHMOD problems or the file permission assigning problem.I was not able to install plugins,themes from inside the wp-admin and i site went un-accessible when i installed some plugins like super cache.I got a “headers already sent” error and many more probs.It was difficult each time going to the file manager and changing the file permissions to make the blog work properly.I finally got a reply in a webhosting forum about the reason for this problem and how to solve.In shared hosting they already make arrangements for scripts like wordpress since they are the mostly used.But since in VPS we have full root access we have to individually make arrangements for what we need and install the required software or script.
How do you solve it?
You can solve all these problems by simply installing a php script.It is called as suPHP and this script takes care of all the permission problems and headers already sent error that you experience in wordpress in knownhost.I will explain how to install suPHP in the coming posts.But have in mind according to knownhost customer support and several other bloggers suPHP had the following disadvantages,
1. Higher CPU usage;
2. Slower work of php scripts;
3. Inability to use any kind of php caching extensions like eAccelerator,
xcache, etc
4. insecure permissions like 777 won’t work
5. it won’t be possible to manage php configuration through .htaccess file, so
any site where any kind of php options are used in .htaccess will stop working
after PhpSuExec activation
