While cutting the objects from the photographs there are many chances of the photo to have some ugly and rough edges. These are small problems and this problem can be solved in three different ways.
There are a wide variety of ways to remove the background from the images. The easiest way to produce such result is the use of fill tools such as bucket fill, magic wind or magic eraser. These tools help in creating the transparent GIFs, PNGs. This can also be used for just swapping the backgrounds. These steps can give some ugly and rough edges that look very ugly and it entirely spoils the good looking what the user really wants. The following three methods are used to remove these rough edges and to enhance the image quality.
Method 1:Using Proper Fill Settings
Let us start with the assumption that the fill method is being used by the user to remove the background of the image. This does not include the using of the eraser, layer masks and the pen tool. The other methods such as paint bucket, magic wind and magic eraser can make the photo better or else depending on the situation it may also make the image worse. The main key factors to be noted during this process are the Anti alias and the Tolerance.
Anti aliasing is nothing but the naturalistic softening of the images. By using this anti aliasing along with the paint bucket, wand and magic eraser will result in better and smoother edges in many situations.
Tolerance is helpful in adjusting the sensitive levels of the fills. The three tools works by filling the selective colors. By clicking on the appropriate colors this adjusts the precision of the fill. The fill with very low numbers are very precise. The fill with higher numbers will fill completely. This can be used to fill, select or delete the colors that are not similar to the color that is being clicked.
Explaining through the image, the image on the left uses a Tolerance of 5 with no anti-aliasing, while the image on the right uses a tolerance of 40 with anti-aliasing.
Method 2: Removing Fuzzy Objects :
One of the notable features present in the Photoshop CS5 is the tools that are used to refine masks with Smart radiuses. This will help in masking the objects very accurately and quickly. Many images are very difficult to be cut because they may have soft edges as in the butterfly in the above image.
There is a tool for editing the masks. This will help in improving the selection and helps in keeping the fuzzy edges.
In the above image the tool used to cut has resulted in a horrible image and the edges are not cut out smoothly and this has cut the butterfly.
The below image has been cut out with the tool named paint bucket. This resulted in the un pleasant image. This resulting image needs to be refined with the mask panel to make it a clear image.
The edge detection property found in the Photoshop is very much helpful in masking out the proper parts of the butterfly and helps in isolating the object. It is based on the concept that atleast one size fits all solution. The user can safely remove the unwanted blurs using the refine mask tool that is found in the mask panel. For the better understanding of the user three images have been used. This illustrates how to develop a better result from this bad mask.
There is also a trick that is used to make the rough selection and turns it to a convincing fuzzy edged object. The only thing is that the user needs to find out the smudge tool that will be found buried in the toolbox. By clicking and holding the blur tool the user can switch to the smudge tool.
There is lot of settings available in the Photoshop. The only thing is that we have to choose the proper tool that suits the particular image. The most important fact to be noted is the strength of the smudge tool. The value must be significantly less than 100% for the system using the mouse. If the user is using the pressure sensitive tablet then he must control the strength accurately rather than approximately. This will result in better images.
The above image shows the image of the butterfly in which the butterfly image is isolated to its own layer. The mask ability is then applied to the image so that the user can change the edges. By this way user cant smudge the edge till the layer mask process is applied to it.
The user needs to just to click and drag to perform the smudge operation. Then the user needs to paint a fuzzy edge. This process creates the softness of the butterfly by removing all unwanted white pixels.
If the process is repeated in all the edges then the resulting image will be fuzzy and soft on all edges. This image will look better on all backgrounds. But it does not look like the original image that looked previously. This is the most usable and simpler way to remove the ugly edges around the image that is cut from the background.
Method 3: Quickly Compensating for Rough and White Edges
The difficult thing to do in the photoshop is that to cut the image from the completely white background and placing it in a dark background such as black background. This will show exactly the rough edges while cutting the image. There are some tricks to do it without affecting the image.
The magic wand tool in the Photoshop is used to remove the white background from the image. Then the cut image is placed in the dark black background in order to test the edges around the image.
Right click on the image layer and choose the Blending options from that. This option will remove the ugly edges from the image to a considerable extent. This depends on the simplicity and the type of the object.
The above shown windows appear. Choose the Inner glow option in that. By adjusting the values in the inner glow, the ugly edges gets eradicated from the image.
Both the normal or darken mode can be done in the blend mode to remove the white edges. The most guaranteed step is to use the same color of the image in the inner glow option. This will remove the ugly white edges to a great extent from the image.
But the above procedure is suitable only for smaller objects. This looks good for a longer look only. While seeing the image clearly, the tiger’s legs should be in white color. But they have also changed to orange brown color in some areas. For this we have to handle another inner glow option that makes slight difference from the current image.
We have to create the layer and should selectively paint in color. This will improve the edges on the dark background.
We have to create a new layer by pressing the Ctrl + Shift + N. This layer should be created in the top of the cut tiger. Then set the layer to the Clipping mask for the tiger image layer. This process can be done by going to Layer option and Create Clipping mask option. Then at last you have to set the blending mode to darken for producing better results.
To pick a color from the image choose the eyedropper tool.
Then paint over the white edges on the image. If necessary dark color can also be used if the image needs to reside in a darker background.
For the areas that need to be lighter in color should be chosen a light color with the help of eye dropper tool.
Most of the people prefer the pen tool to remove the background. But as a fact the combination of Wand, Bucket Fill and magic eraser is the perfect way to remove the background. Moreover these tools are so user friendly too. Another advantage of using this tool is that the eraser or paint brush tool needs to be used. This will clean up the ugly edges from the image. This process will still improve the appearance of the image.
By the steps illustrated above you can remove the background from the image so fairly and quickly. The output also will be so amazing without any ugly edges.
